The disillusion of the American dream

- The Great Gatsby book review

The Great Gatsby is the representative work of American writer Francis Scott Fitzgerald. It is a true reflection of 1920s. The book is a classical novel and has profound meaning of the essence of the American dream’s illusory. The writer showed the American social after the World War I in the book. It uncovers the money worship and hedonism in the Jazz Age and people’s selfishness and indifference in that time. What the novel describes is a tragic story about the disillusion of the American dream.

The story happened after the World War I. A young business man named Nick Carraway rent a house in the Long Island. In the opposite house there lives his cousin Daisy Buchanan and her husband Tom

Buchanan. In the villa next lives Jay Gatsby. Gatsby holds big party every weekend in his villa but there is few people has seen his face. After a while Nick knows that when Gatsby was a soldier, he fell in love with Daisy. However, Daisy finally married with a rich man Tom Buchanan. When the war is ended, Gatsby began to do illegal business and become a millionaire in high society. In order to draw Daisy’s attention, he bought a big house in opposite to Daisy’s and often holds big party. Gatsby and Daisy meet again in the help of Nick. When this is known by Tom, he is burst into anger and they have a quarrel. With extremely nervous, Daisy

drives the car and killed Tom’s mistress Myrtle accidentally. However, Tom suggests Myrtle’s husband Wilson that it is Gatsby who killed her wife. In extreme anger Wilson shoot Gatsby and suicide. In the end of the book, when Nick held a funeral for Gatsby, none of his old friends join. Nick is disappointed to the dark high society of New York so he leave the city and go back to his home in the American Midwest.

The theme of the novel is to present the tragedy of the American dream’s disillusion by showing the story of Gatsby’s pursuing of dream. The so-called "American dream" means that in America everyone is equality of opportunity. People can realize their dream and achieve success just by themselves’ struggle. The American dream has always been an ideal that people are convinced of and pursue of. It is a kind of spiritual strength that promote America to developing and flourishing quickly. In this novel, the short life of Gatsby has go through the process of dream from start to burst. It symbolize the rise and burst of the American dream at the same time. One side of his American Dream is the dream of money. He realize this dream by illegal business which made him from a poor boy to a millionaire. However, the other side of his dream is the

dream of love and it make him into a sad ending. In fact, his loving dream is another form of his money dream. At first when he fell in love with Daisy, he was attracted by her material life. He yearns for not so much Daisy’s love as Daisy’s high society life. Daisy is the combination of love and money which he’s longing for. She is the represent of a beautiful life. However, in real life, Daisy is far from what Gatsby imagine. She is a selfish, shallow and timid girl and all she wants is money and high society life. Finally Gatsby’s dream broken and it also symbolize the broken of the American dream. The essence of the tragedy of Gatsby is the tragedy of American idealism. But then again, although Gatsby’s effort did not pay off, his spirit of struggling to realize his dream and change the fate is moving and deserves our admiration and learning.

Pursuit for dreams

—after reading The Great Gatsby

I have heard of the famous novel The Great Gatsby for many years. However, until recently have I got the time and mood to read it. As soon as I finish reading, I find my previous unwarranted assumption of it totally wrong.

This is a story about Gatsby and his pursuit for the ‘American dreams’. During the World War One, the poor soldier Gatsby fell in love with an upper class girl named Daisy. But due to the wide gap between them, Daisy decided to marry Tom, a man of her class, instead of Gatsby. Broken-hearted Gatsby then held the conviction that money was of the greatest importance. He strongly believed in the ‘American dreams’, which as we all know, advocates that one can achieve whatever he or she likes through continuous efforts. He strived for five years to become a millionaire and bought a villa near Daisy’s to attract her. He was too addicted to his fantasy to realize that Daisy was no longer the lovely girl she used to be. Eventually, he was killed because of her crime.

After reading it, something reverberates in my heart. I can’t help thinking of the theme Fitzgerald trying to convey. One thing may be the lonely void of people’s spiritual world. I am deeply impressed by chapter 3, where a vivid description of a party is given.

There were beautiful girls, drunk men, and boisterous crowds there, but none of them perceived the pointless of their lives and the barren of their minds. To see this phenomenon deeper, there were two circumstances underlying it. The first is the lack of dreams. Some people, especially the people of the upper class, lived an aimless life. They wasted their time and money and took an indifferent attitude towards life. They chased for temporary ecstasy but lost their identity in eternity, namely Daisy and Tom. The second is the misleading of dreams. Some others like Gatsby, bravely pursued their dreams, yet going to a diverged way unconsciously. They might mix up the concept of a richer life and a happier life, viewing a higher social state and a peaceful fulfilled life as equality. Unfortunately, when they were busy chasing their dreams, everything changed with time. When they were anxious about the to-gets, they ignored what they had already had and lost the alert to the constant changes. The excellent use of symbolization illustrates this idea perfectly. The imagery of ‘green light’ is the most important symble which occurred three times in the novel. The green-light’s obscure in the mist indicates the dim of Gatsby’s dreams.

As far as I am concerned, this story can serve as a reminder for us. To live a meaningful life, we should carefully choose some dreams to pursue. And in the process of fulfilling our dreams, we

should always be concious about what we really desire. Anyhow, only by pursuing the proper dreams can we finally get to the deep springs of happiness.

Love and marriage is a constant topic among human, In Pride And Prejudice, Jane Austen told a story about five marriages for us in her rational and humorous writing tone, which explains the truth of marriage: love. Marriage should be based on love, while it can’t have access to happiness when just based on money or appearance. And a deeper knowledge is needed when we start our affection . Exclude vanity and prejudice, and think about each other's moral character objectively, and we can know someone better and more exact---- only good moral character deserves real love.

The two pairs lovers in the book, Elizabeth and Darcy, Jane and Bingley, mainly based their marriage on love and excellent moral character, though thinking about looks and family background to small extent. Elizabeth and Darcy's love story is most relished especially. During twisting journey from they hated each other to finally fell in love and got married, Elizabeth and Darcy gradually got to know each other, removed prejudice, and discard meaningless so-called face. Eventually they realized and fell in love with the virtues of each other in readers’ expectation and wishes. Furthermore that Elizabeth refused Darcy's courtship before accepting, still further show her defiance of marriages without love. On the contrary, Charlotte, Elizabeth's friend, who thinks she is not beautiful besides having no money, chose to combine with stupid and shallow Collins out of economic considerations, and lived a ensured but dull marriage life. Similarly, Elizabeth's sister, Lydia, as well as her father's marriage is unfortunate, for they were confused by the beauty of appearance, while ignoring the moral character. They would be bound to regret for their choice all their life .

All in all, we must be for love alignment in the face of marriage; and we must will be subject to moral character in the face of love; and we must be objective and fair in the face of judging the moral character.

Live

This month, I have finished book live which describes how a man lives strongly after experiencing his whole family members dead. This story is a tragedy but the major character insists on living instead of committing suicide. The main role’s name is Fu Gui whose family is very rich. He is a gambler and loses all his family property earned by his grandfather. He is caught by the army and used as labor on his way to find a doctor for his mother. After a few years, he comes back to home and is reunited with his family. After a while, his son dies because of blood donation. In his whole life, his daughter, his wife, his son-in-law and his grandson die one after another. Finally, he is the only one who survives with an almost dying cow.

After so many horrible things, Fu chooses to live and does not cry the following of his life. Maybe he has already given up any hope to live happily but he needs to live.. The truth that no one but him is in his family has not knocked him down. However, I think that the thing which is alive is his body not his heart. In the end of the story, he and his cow walk in the field and he talks to the cow and calls out all his family’s name. Eventually, he lives with his family which is in his memory.

Life will never go smoothly. People will face a lot of difficulties and setbacks in their journey. As a pessimist, life is a tragedy for me. We have to work hard and compete with others to survive without any rest. After more than ten year’s study, I finally go to college but I have to forget everything I have learned before and learn a different way to survive in the society. I feel so tired but I cannot give up because my family needs me. We are the least important things for the whole world but we are the most significant gifts for our family. We are human not animal, which dooms us to struggle for our life. We have no choice but to fight. No matter what happens, the only thing we need to remember: as long as we live, we will have hope in the future.

Jane Eyre

Jane was an orphan. She lived in her aunt’s house. Her aunt didn’t like her, so she took her to an orphanage. Jane studied in the orphanage and learned a lot of things. When Jane grew up, she worked as a governess in a big family and taught the child in this family. Bit by bit, Jane and her master Mr Rochester fell in love with each other. But the master had a wife. She was a madwoman. When Jane knew this, she left her teaching post. But she could not forget her master. So, at last, she visited her master. At that time, her master’ house was burnt down and he became handicapped. His mad wife died in the big fire. Jane decided to get married with him and look after him.

Jane Eyre found his real love and she was a happy woman. The most important thing is that Jane believed everybody were equal.

In my mind, though a person’s beautiful face can make others once feel that is attractive .if his or her mind isn’t the same beautiful as the appearance, such as beauty cannot last , when others find that the beauty which had charmed them was only a falsity, it’s not true,

they will not like the person any more. For a long time, only a person’s great virtue, a noble soul, a beautiful heart can be called as an everlsting beauty, just as Kahill Gibran had said, that ‘Beauty is a heart enflamed and a soul enchanted'.There are great differences in our souls, and from that, we can know that whether a man is noble or ordinary, and even obscure, that is, whether he is beautiful or not.
